The rising sign or ascendant (the external self) is second in importance only to the Sun-Sign (the inner self). For most people who know you less than intimately, it may be the determining factor as they see, identify, and know you. It also influences how you view, act, and react to others and the environment. While your Sun-Sign is determined by your birth date (and in some border-line cases the time), the rising sign (ascendant) must be calculated for the exact birth time and place. Theoretically, the rising sign advances one degree (of 360 degrees of a full circle -- a 24-hour day) every four minutes, meaning each 30-degree sign takes about two hours to move upward -- due to counterclockwise axial rotation of planet earth -- across the ascendant point: the eastern horizon. Definition: decan (decanate) -- a ten-degree distance (division or portion) of a sign; each zodiac sign has three decans, which collectively equal thirty degrees. First decan (any sign) is 00.00 to 9.59.59 - second decan is 19.59.59 - third decan is 20.00 to 29.59.59.

[Rule-of-Thumb or "ballpark": If you were born during the first 40 minutes of any rising-sign's beginning hour (see second link below for ascendant table), the first decan 0 to 10 degrees likely will be ascending; if born 41 to 80 minutes (1 hour +20 minutes) after the sign's beginning hour the second decan likely will be ascending; if born 81 minutes (1 hour +21 minutes) to 2 hours after, the third decan likely will be ascending. An accurately calculated horoscope is necessary for determining for sure the decan ascending.]

The rising sign (and its decan) are of great significance in determining your personality, mannerisms, character, mentality, emotions, weeknesses, health and life-pattern, as well as characteristics to cultivate, or correct. If you or someone you know has Aries rising, you'll want to study the "Overview" first and then the decan information.

Hopefully you know your rising sign (ascendant). It not, refer to the easy-to-use ascendant (rising sign) table here.

OR -- If uncertain about (or need to verify) your own (or anyone's) natal horoscope's true Rising Sign (Ascendant) and the Decan -- [First Decan: 00 to 10 degrees / Second Decan: 10 to 20 degrees / Third Decan :20 to 30 degrees], you can find out fast and FREE (plus get sign/degree/minutes for Moon Sign / Sun-Sign / Midheaven (10th House sign), and latitude/longitude of birthplace) HERE. After finding Rising Sign (AS), click its link near bottom of the "Atlas/Astrological Atlas" page to read about your own (or anyone's) Rising Sign and its Decan.

Use also to read your SUN-SIGN (inner self) and MOON SIGN (emotional self)

[Hint Number One: The information following can be applied as well to your Sun-Sign (your inner self). Relate the "Overview" to natal Sun in Gemini. Also read "First Decan" if you were born in the first 10 days of this sign -- Sun in 0 to 10 degrees; "Second Decan" if born in days 10 to 20 -- Sun in 10 to 20 degrees; "Third Decan" if born in days 20 to 30 -- Sun in 20 to 30 degrees.]

[Hint Number Two: The descriptions following can also be applied to your Moon-Sign (your emotional self). Relate the "Overview" to natal Moon in Gemini. Also read "First Decan" if your Moon is in the first 10 degrees of this sign; "Second Decan" if your Moon is 10 to 20 degrees of this sign; "Third Decan" if your Moon is in 20 to 30 degrees of this sign.]

Quick, mental, imaginative, studious, logical, talkative, communicative, forgetful, fretful, nervous, flighty, worrisome, conceited, tale-bearing, and sarcastic are words in tune with you because Mercury rules your facade, externalized ego, appearance, and personality (your external self). Your general approach to everyday life is keyed to words, information, ideas, and communication. At your best, you are a perfect model of the efficient handler of information; at your worst, you are merely an ineffective paper shuffler.

No doubt you are well-read, educated, and informed. The only question is: Are you prepared in the areas which will be most useful and productive? Many of you go about accumulating bits and pieces of infomation which may not have any real value in aiding you to achieve personal success. You like to talk, sometimes too much. Make sure that what you have to say is of importance and interest to others. You want to guard against getting a reputation as a gossip or one who only talks and never listens to anything others have to say.

Gemini rising inclines to average height. The body is usually thin, with a short trunk and long limbs. Some may even appear frail. The head is long, narrow between the ears; but above the shape is slightly bulging on both sides. The hair tends to lighter shades in color and is usually fine in texture. The skin may be very thin, so thin that the veins may show from underneath. The complexion tends to the lighter shades. Teeth may not be overly strong, as calcium content may be somewhat lacking. The voice typically is light, sometimes high-pitched, even shrill if you become excited; it is very adaptable, however. It's easy for you to be a mimic. You may be a good ventriloquist, puppeteer, or impressionist. The speech rate is usually rapid because the thoughts race ahead at a fast clip. You tend to interrupt others as they speak. Corrective lenses often are necessary. You may appear younger than your age and are able to wear youthful attire successfully indefinitely.

Mannerisms may include a tendency to fidget with objects, having periods of apparent inattention -- and a tendency to count window panes, bricks, cracks in the pavement, etc. The hands need to be busy at all times. Since Gemini is a dualistic (double-bodied) sign, it's only natural that you would possess a "two-sided" or "flip-flop" character. Versatility, adaptability, and a fondness for novelty are three outstanding traits. There is an unstoppable desire to communicate. The character often lacks real strength or stamina; for example, you may go to pieces in a real (or imagined) emergency.

It is intellect which governs you, but the intelligence is usually more superficial than profound. There is a rapid learning ability, but it is easily diverted from one thing to another. There are good powers of self-expression and a very quick sense of humor. The emotious are very evident on the surface but seldom can be touched deeply.

The sex urge may not be too strong, and some of the numerous relationships may indeed be platonic. Weaknesses can include diffusiveness, inaccuracy, a tendency to gossip too much, nosiness, a knack of prevaricating (lying) quite easily if it's necessary in order to avoid embarrassment, and a tendency to become too preoccupied with trivial matters and details. If not careful, you can become a "jack-of-all-trades" -- and not be especially good at any one thing.

There is a wiry constitution; but since you live mainly on your nerves, they likely would be at the seat or any illness that you might experience. Take special care of your lungs, hands, arms, and shoulders. It's important that you have plenty of fresh air and maintain a regular schedule. The life pattern is changeable; the years between 20 and 30 may bring the best opportunities.

Characteristics good for cultivation are intelligence, expression, idealism, ambition, dexterity, tolerance, and temperance. Traits for correction include restlessness, verboseness, trickery, shiftiness, waywardness, shallowness, and nervousness. These less-desirable traits can be minimized or even corrected by the application of your outstanding positive, mostly mental, qualities.

FIRST DECAN of GEMINI Rising (00.00 - 10.00 degrees)

Copyright Dell Magazines [Dell Horoscope] -- Online version Copyright 1999 - 2017 - Elbert Wade [Author]

This Gemini/MERCURY decan is, of course, the most typical. Much of what was covered above applies fully, but there is more. Gemini -- natural ruler of the third house of the conscious mind, communication, experience, and experimenting--w ell may give you a sharp, above-average intellect. What you do with this is, of course, up to you. You could become a good salesperson, writer, teacher of any number of subjects in the broad field of communications; you might work in these areas as well. Or, you could become a flighty, gossipy, scatterbrain whom others may find an interesting novelty for a while but won't want to become too involved for long.

You are restless and may find yourself quite uncomfortable if both your mind and hands aren't occupied. Reading may be one of your favorite pastimes; almost any subject might capture your interest -- for a time. Try to direct your reading choices into areas that are usable and marketable. Your youthful appearance can be a definite asset, as well as keeping others guessing how old you really are. You may be left-handed or at least ambidextrous. The third-house influence likely will cause you to do more than the average amount of travel, much of it local in nature. It's probable that you love to drive.

Appearance-wise, you seem intelligent and normally act in the same manner. Others ask you many questions because you look as if you should know the correct answers. Because you are so active, seldom do you need to be too concerned about how much you eat; in fact, you may not have a very large appetite anyway. Even though you may not appear very strong, others may not believe how much strength and energy you can demonstrate. Your voice is very clear, your speech precise and normally correct. Seldom are you at a loss for something to say, even if you know little about the particular subject.

SECOND DECAN of GEMINI Rising (10.00 - 20.00 degrees)

The important sub-influences of this Libra/VENUS decan can induce numerous rather interesting differences and variations, Libra -- natural ruler of the seventh house of marriage, partnerships, close associates, associations, and legal matters -- will incline you to be more of a "me-too" rather than an "I-am" person. Your relationships with others are extremely important and may either make or break your life. Because of this important fact, you need to be especially careful in the selection of companions/associates. The choice of a mate is, of course, of the utmost importance. Avoid rushing into a situation while you're too young to know what you're doing.

The Libra/seventh-house influence combined with Mercury can give you special abilities in the field of mathematics. You might become an accountant, bookkeeper, or instructor of math, algebra, trigonometry, physics, etc. Design -- including interior/exterior decoration, advertising layout, and architecture might be good career/business choices. You might be quite successful in the legal profession, especially as trial attorney since you are an effective speaker who can communicate information clearly and convincingly.

Appearance-wise, you might honestly thank your "lucky" stars for giving you Venus (planet of physical beauty) as the ruler of your ascending decan. Venus can improve bone structure; aid skin texture; give well-formed teeth. Your voice may be unusually well-balanced -- even musical.

It is your nature to want to keep your environment in proper order at all times. Uneven wall hangings or other things which are out of balance can upset you very much. You insist upon harmony and good taste generally. Your disposition is usually positive and friendly, but you will stand up for your ideals.

THIRD DECAN of GEMINI Rising (20.00 - 30.00 degrees)

The sub-influences of this Aquarius/URANUS decan can induce interesting external characteristics and personality differences. Aquarius -- natural ruler of the eleventh house of friends, hopes, and wishes--inclines you to he very much a social type, a friend-oriented individual. You live an important percentage of your life through your relationships with others. You have an inherent desire to want to reform beliefs and situations for the benefit of all, not just a select few. You are optimistic, believing (often mistakenly) that the better side of people ultimately will out.

You may or would like to belong to clubs, organizations and groups which are supportive of your beliefs and ideals. You would make an excellent leader or officer in these organizations, or you might elect to form your own. Select your friends wisely and carefully for they can either aid you to accomplish more or pull you down, holding you back. Without doubt, Uranus adds uniqueness to your personality. You are one-of-a-kind, whether this manifests itself through your mannerisms, speech pattern, or otherwise.

Appearance-wise, Uranus likely will add something essentially striking. Sometimes it gives an unusual eye color, a large amount of hair or a unique pattern of hair growth. Wherever you go, you seem to get attention from others, perhaps a bit more than you'd prefer at times. You'd do well to realize that others normally don't mean to stare; it's just that they want to be certain they saw you right the first time.

You could turn this attention-getting characteristic into an asset, especially if you aspire to succeed in any career/business (acting, politics, etc.) in which getting others' attention is an essential advantage. You usually show a friendly countenance and normally find it easy to smile. You could have outstandingly-attractive teeth. Some of your opinions may be a bit too advanced (or "far-out") for others to appreciate.
