The rising sign or ascendant (the external self) is second in importance only to the Sun-Sign (the inner self). For most people who know you less than intimately, it may be the determining factor as they see, identify, and know you. It also influences how you view, act, and react to others and the environment. While your Sun-Sign is determined by your birth date (and in some border-line cases the time), the rising sign (ascendant) must be calculated for the exact birth time and place. Theoretically, the rising sign advances one degree (of 360 degrees of a full circle -- a 24-hour day) every four minutes, meaning each 30-degree sign takes about two hours to move upward -- due to counterclockwise axial rotation of planet earth -- across the ascendant point: the eastern horizon. Definition: decan (decanate) -- a ten-degree distance (division or portion) of a sign; each zodiac sign has three decans, which collectively equal thirty degrees. First decan (any sign) is 00.00 to 9.59.59 - second decan is 10.00.to 19.59.59 - third decan is 20.00 to 29.59.59.

[Rule-of-Thumb or "ballpark": If you were born during the first 40 minutes of any rising-sign's beginning hour (see second link below for ascendant table), the first decan 0 to 10 degrees likely will be ascending; if born 41 to 80 minutes (1 hour +20 minutes) after the sign's beginning hour the second decan likely will be ascending; if born 81 minutes (1 hour +21 minutes) to 2 hours after, the third decan likely will be ascending. An accurately calculated horoscope is necessary for determining for sure the decan ascending.]

The rising sign (and its decan) are of great significance in determining your personality, mannerisms, character, mentality, emotions, weeknesses, health and life-pattern, as well as characteristics to cultivate, or correct. If you or someone you know has Aries rising, you'll want to study the "Overview" first and then the decan information.

Hopefully you know your rising sign (ascendant). It not, refer to the easy-to-use ascendant (rising sign) table here.

[Hint Number One: The information following can be applied as well to your Sun-Sign (your inner self). Relate the "Overview" to natal Sun in Cancer. Also read "First Decan" if you were born in the first 10 days of this sign -- Sun in 0 to 10 degrees; "Second Decan" if born in days 10 to 20 -- Sun in 10 to 20 degrees; "Third Decan" if born in days 20 to 30 -- Sun in 20 to 30 degrees.]

[Hint Number Two: The descriptions following can also be applied to your Moon-Sign (your emotional self). Relate the "Overview" to natal Moon in Cancer. Also read "First Decan" if your Moon is in the first 10 degrees of this sign; "Second Decan" if your Moon is 10 to 20 degrees of this sign; "Third Decan" if your Moon is in 20 to 30 degrees of this sign.]

CANCER RISING -- OVERVIEW

Regardless of the decan ascending, the ever-changing Moon rules the external self. Restlessness, changes, and emotional sensitivity are commonplace. You are inclined to reflect your environment -- whether positive or negative -- in much the same manner that the Moon reflects the light of the Sun. You are perhaps better suited to "imitate" than to create.

Having a nature which is more or less "spongelike," you have to be especially careful in choosing your environment and associates, for very soon you start to identify with and reflect whatever is close at hand. Pick, insofar as possible, only places and companions which are positive and conducive to real progress for you.

You tend to be rather short in stature; indeed, very few of you are above average in height. The trunk of the body usually is large; the limbs may be relatively short. Some roundness or plumpness in build is typical. The head and face are "Moonlike," and the profile is somewhat dish-shaped. The chin may be well-rounded and pronounced and have a tendency to be double. The eyebrows seem to be raised questioningly. The teeth, unfortunately, may be somewhat poor in quality or appearance, often because you may tend to wear them down because of "nerves." Typically the hands are plump, the fingers short. The voice tone is often low and the speech rate is normally slow and deliberate.

When moving about, you either roll along nautically or sidle along like your namesake, the crab. Generally your mannerisms are very crablike. You may instinctively clasp the stomach area when in repose or if perplexed. When idle, the fingers tend to curl inward; the thumbs may be tucked tightly into the palms. A person with Cancer rising is traditionally the introverted type. Timidity, self-consciousness, and a deep desire for experience can cause you to be quite temperamental at times. You are basically cautious, prudent, and untiringly persistent in going after whatever you desire most.

Keen insight and acute intuition are common since your mind operates mainly through your emotions. This also tends to give a vivid imagination but not very much instinct to be consistently logical or very practical. The sense of humor is gentle; the memory is remarkably good, especially of the early years of your life. The general emotional nature is sentimental, protective, and very romantic. Since you are exceptionally receptive to external sensations, tears and laughter come readily and quickly. In fact, tears may come more easily since you do have a melancholy side to your nature.

Any inherent weaknesses stem from the following: lack of initiative, vacillation, a tendency to put things off, sulkiness, a strong propensity to hoard "worthless" items/feelings/memories and negative experiences, and a tendency to a lack for originality. Even though your system is rather sensitive, you are usually healthy. After experiencing numerous childhood complaints, you may indeed grow healthier with age.

You may be very sensitive to changes in the weather and to changes of the Moon, ruler of your "everyday" self. Cancer rising typically is one of the longest-living of the zodiacal types perhaps aided by your normal extra attention to your health and diet. Travel nearly always figures importantly at some time or another; but sooner or later, you long to and likely will return to your homeland.

There is a very pronounced seven-year-cycle pattern to your life, as the ruler of your ascendent (Moon) either squares, opposes, or conjoins its natal position every seven years. The 28th and 49th years may be outstandingly significant. Your main characteristics of a desirable nature and good for cultivation are expressed by such words as: conscientiousness, economy, patience, versatility, adaptability, sympathy, devotion, caring, and patriotism. Less-than-desirable characteristics that might (if not already done) need correction or improvement are denoted by these words: vanity, timorousness, possessiveness, sentimentality, touchiness and restlessness.

A fourth-house influence makes the concept of family an important part of your life. Wherever you are, you need to belong to some sort of "family," even if they're not related to you. More than those with other ascendants, you are likely to resemble your parents, especially as the years pass. Sooner or later, you'll need to own your own home.

FIRST DECAN of CANCER Rising (00.00 - 10.00 degrees)

Copyright Dell Magazines [Dell Horoscope] -- Online version Copyright 1999 - 2014 - Elbert Wade [Author]

This Cancer/MOON decan is, of course, the most typical. Very much of what was covered earlier applies fully, but there is more. As this decan relates to the external self, you know very well that the only thing in life which is certain is change. Indeed you may often feel that you get up in a totally-different world every day.

These ten degrees might rather accurately be described as the "rollercoaster" decan, as your life can rise to exciting peaks and just as quickly plunge to the very bottom without much notice or warning. However, you can take some comfort in knowing that when the cycle seems at its lowest, it will soon turn upward.

You are most subject to being influenced by your surroundings, so you must work constantly to try to stay away from negatives of all types. Choose your companions and associates with utmost caution. Negative people will only pull you down. Avoid living in places that are not cheerful and bright. You'd do well to read, study, and become a student of positive thinking. Full Moons and New Moons have a very potent influence on you personally. Try not to make important decisions during the Full Moon period.

Your parents are very important to you, and one of them -- likely your mother -- has been a major influence in your life -- positivety or negatively. What she or they taught or didn't teach you in your early years was most important in helping or hindering your progress. You'll feel more content if you remain in contact with parents and other family members as long as it's possible to do so. Work on controlling your restlessness or you could too easily become the "rolling stone that gathers no moss."

SECOND DECAN of CANCER Rising (10.00 - 20.00)

Copyright Dell Magazines [Dell Horoscope] -- Online version Copyright 1999 - 2014 - Elbert Wade [Author]

The subtle sub-influences of this Scorpio/PLUTO decan can cause some rather interesting differences. It adds more willpower, which can enable you to persist long enough to realize fully the benefits and rewards of what you set your mind to. You're certainly not as much of a potential "rolling stone" as the first-decan individual.

You may be a bit overly-secretive and may be regarded by others as somewhat mysterious or not easy to get to know or understand. Concerning this matter, it's not that you're too complex; it's just that you cover up or hide so much of yourself that at times you may frustrate others who would like to know more about you in order to feel closer. Since you may be well above the average in sex appeal, there certainly are those who would like to know you more intimately.

While the fixed nature of this decan can add valuable tenacity, you need in be careful not to overdo this quality to the point that you could be regarded by others as unyielding, stubborn, or bullheaded. Remember the old truism which states in effect that a wise man may change his mind (and ways), but a fool never does.

This is the decan of mutually-shared benefits and responsibilites, meaning you can gain markedly financially and otherwise if you are careful when forming unions or making agreements.

You may have a commanding fondness for investigation and otherwise finding out what makes everything and everyone "tick." This could be a valuable asset if you choose a life's work which requires research or discovery. If you get too carried away with this inclination, especially in your personal relationships, it could backfire and cause a negative reaction from those who might accuse you of prying.

THIRD DECAN of CANCER Rising (20.00 - 30.00 degrees)

The sub-influence of this Pisces/NEPTUNE decan can induce some unique and very interesting characteristics. Neptune can add markedly to your everyday creativity and imagination, as it can be useful in the general creative process. You can use this to your advantage for it gives you the ability to employ your good taste with wardrobe and makeup, as well as in selecting and decorating your environment.

You might be a good interior decorator, window dresser, gardener, or landscape artist. You might also be talented with a paintbrush, musical instrument, sewing machine or sculptor's clay. You appreciate most art forms and may have an excellent sense of rhythm.

Your whole personality must attune itself to the beat of life all about for your greatest happiness and efficiency. Of all those with Cancer rising, you likely are the most sensitive; you laugh easily and may cry with only slight triggering. You must be careful to stay away from negative people and environs, as Neptune blended with the Moon may incline you to "soak up" practically everything that's around you.

You tend to be somewhat private in nature. You may need to work a little harder in order to bring your many talents and abilities into actual fruition. You're probably fairly well adjusted to accepting the fact that you too often experience delays and setbacks, perhaps more so than most of your friends.

More than the other decans of Cancer rising, you are very romantic and something of an idealist when it comes to matters of the heart. Just exercise a little extra practicality or you well may find youself involved in emotional alliances that aren't going anywhere, and, unfortunately, may never lead to anything you truly want. Be sensibly practical -- along with being idealistic.
