The rising sign or ascendant (the external self) is second in importance only to the Sun-Sign (the inner self). For most people who know you less than intimately, it may be the determining factor as they see, identify, and know you. It also influences how you view, act, and react to others and the environment. While your Sun-Sign is determined by your birth date (and in some border-line cases the time), the rising sign (ascendant) must be calculated for the exact birth time and place. Theoretically, the rising sign advances one degree (of 360 degrees of a full circle -- a 24-hour day) every four minutes, meaning each 30-degree sign takes about two hours to move upward -- due to counterclockwise axial rotation of planet earth -- across the ascendant point: the eastern horizon. Definition: decan (decanate) -- a ten-degree distance (division or portion) of a sign; each zodiac sign has three decans, which collectively equal thirty degrees. First decan (any sign) is 00.00 to 9.59.59 - second decan is 10.00.to 19.59.59 - third decan is 20.00 to 29.59.59.

[Rule-of-Thumb or "ballpark": If you were born during the first 40 minutes of any rising-sign's beginning hour (see second link below for ascendant table), the first decan 0 to 10 degrees likely will be ascending; if born 41 to 80 minutes (1 hour +20 minutes) after the sign's beginning hour the second decan likely will be ascending; if born 81 minutes (1 hour +21 minutes) to 2 hours after, the third decan likely will be ascending. An accurately calculated horoscope is necessary for determining for sure the decan ascending.]

The rising sign (and its decan) are of great significance in determining your personality, mannerisms, character, mentality, emotions, weeknesses, health and life-pattern, as well as characteristics to cultivate, or correct. If you or someone you know has Aries rising, you'll want to study the "Overview" first and then the decan information.

Hopefully you know your rising sign (ascendant). It not, refer to the easy-to-use ascendant (rising sign) table here.

[Hint Number One: The information following can be applied as well to your Sun-Sign (your inner self). Relate the "Overview" to natal Sun in Leo. Also read "First Decan" if you were born in the first 10 days of this sign -- Sun in 0 to 10 degrees; "Second Decan" if born in days 10 to 20 -- Sun in 10 to 20 degrees; "Third Decan" if born in days 20 to 30 -- Sun in 20 to 30 degrees.]

[Hint Number Two: The descriptions following can also be applied to your Moon-Sign (your emotional self). Relate the "Overview" to natal Moon in Leo. Also read "First Decan" if your Moon is in the first 10 degrees of this sign; "Second Decan" if your Moon is 10 to 20 degrees of this sign; "Third Decan" if your Moon is in 20 to 30 degrees of this sign.]

LEO RISING -- OVERVIEW

Copyright Dell Magazines [Dell Horoscope] -- Online version Copyright 1999 - 2014 - Elbert Wade [Author]

The life-giving, warm, and powerful Sun (the only star in earth's solar system) rules the external ego of all with this natal ascendant. You tend to radiate, to generate, and give "light" to others and the environment. You are perhaps more effective and much happier if you create and cause things to happen rather than merely imitate or reflect that which is all about.

Ego is accented, especially since the Sun (ruler of the inner self) is also ruler of the outer self. This causes you to be much the same person within and without. The traditional fifth-house characteristics of youthfulness, pleasantness, and good humor are frequently brought to the obvious and conscious levels of your everyday life.

While most individuals with Leo ascending tend to be from average to slghtly above average in height, the body is strong, with a full trunk; limbs are usually proportionate. With many, the head is rather large and roundish. The hair is fine and may be light in color; it may grow rather low on the neck.

The eyebrows may be thick and well-formed. The skin texture usually is very good and should appear quite healthy. The teeth may be unusually white, well-formed, somewhat large, and evenly spaced. The voice is full-toned; the speech pattern may be rather decisive and often commanding. Others tend to listen and obey -- especially when you "roar" like a lion.

The "showy" nature of Leo causes you to love colorful clothes and all other kinds of adornments. There may be a "natural" taste for the "loud," and it's entirely likely that at times you may slightly overdo good taste in your dress. Regardless, everything you wear must (or should) be of the best quality you can afford.

Your mannerisms might be described as catlike. You may be inclined to knead cushions and pillows, to stroke materials such as velvet or corduroy sensuously, and to lick your lips with satisfaction. You could unconsciously rub or scratch your neck and head when upset or nervous.

Very deep pride is at the root of the Leo-rising character. There's ambition, self-assurance, complacancy, organizational ability, tenacity, reasonable conservatism, and a natural instinct for leadership. Your loyalty normally is quite pronounced.

The mentality may appear to be greater than it actually is because you possess an ability to express yourself in such a way that you impress others favorably. On occasion there may be an inspired flair; but your greatest mental asset is the ability to put ideas and thoughts together and express them effectively.

You may possess a good amount of artistic talent and ability. You do not appreciate a joke about yourself. Your ambitions are very powerful and often sustained. Leo rising possibly has the most pronounced warmhearted and sincere feelings for others.

Your well-being depends on the opportunity to give and receive affection, to have others' companionship, and to be admired. Any disillusionment over affectional ties can be very upsetting. This is so because you are deeply idealistic -- as well as romantic.

Most weaknesses tend to stem from vanity, gullibility, laziness, extravagance, excessive pride, arrogance, and a too-dominating attitude. Strangely, excessive conservatism may, at times, be a handicap. Normally, there's a very strong constitution; you usually look as healthy as you feel. Your stamina seems almost inexhaustible. The nervous system should be quite stable. "Robust" might describe your overall health profile.

The life pattern is stable and normally follows ten-year cycles. The years encompassing the forties and the sixties are often the peek periods. The principal characteristics of a desirable nature and traits for cultivation are expressed by such words as these: loyalty, inspiration, frankness, kindness, hopefulness, magnetism, tolerance, fearlessness, idealism, creativity, sincerity, industriousness and hospitality.

Some undesirable characteristics for correction are denoted by these words and terms: too much arrogance, an overbearing nature, impetuousness, overdominance, carelessness, gullibility, temper, hotheadedness, too much pride without a real basis, and "acting" to the point that you lose sight of what really is fact and what is fiction.

FIRST DECAN of LEO Rising (00.00 - 10.00 degrees)

Copyright Dell Magazines [Dell Horoscope] -- Online version Copyright 1999 - 2014 - Elbert Wade [Author]

This Leo/SUN decan is, of course, the most typical. Very much of what was covered above applies fully, but, yes, there is more. The fixed nature of this decan gives you a tremendous amount of added staying power. Once you set out to accomplish anything, you will persist regardless of the obstacles until you succeed.

Added to this determination is the cardinal (driving) nature of this first decan which can help to supply the energy and stamina to persist. Your personality and physical appearance have a certain brightness and sparkle that may be envied by those with other less-illustrious ascendants. You demonstrate an accented pride in yourself, your appearance, and in practically everything you do. This pride is easily spotted by anyone who notes your erect walk and the upward tilt of your head.

When you come on the scene all the other zodiacal "animals" are aware that you have arrived and tend to respect, honor and make room, for they know the "king" is in the area. Since you can command the spotlight of attention so easily, you've the need to exercise care that you don't overdo or abuse this privilege or you can too easily create envy or resentment from some others who don't especially appreciate "royalty." You need to practice giving others important to you a bit of the limelight from time to time if you wish to be as well liked and highly regarded as you want.

It's most probable that you have some natural acting talent and ability that could see you personally involved in the theater in some manner, or utilizing these talents quite positively in other vocations -- as well as in your everyday personal life.

You are gregarious and are not fulfilled unless you can relate freely and frequently to others in your business and personal life. Regardless of your Sun-Sign, you should avoid accepting any role or position which would necessitate your becoming anything resembling a recluse or too-private person.

SECOND DECAN of LEO Rising (10.00 - 20.00 degrees)

The important sub-influences of this Sagittarius/JUPITER decan can cause numerous and rather interesting differences. The Jupiter influence tends to amplify, enlarge, and magnify the more traditional Leo characteristics.

You may be taller and/or larger than first-or third-decan Leo-rising individuals. The head often is quite large. The smile is broadly beaming and may reveal very large white teeth; they may fit the description of "star's teeth." Many of you will need to be careful with diet, especially as the years begin to count up, if you wish to avoid what could become a bothersome or even serious weight problem.

Jupiter can help your sense of humor in a very positive way which can aid with relating to others. It also seems to add an element of good luck which often comes to your aid when things seem not to be going the way you'd like. With some, it adds a bit of the gambler's instinct; you do enjoy taklng chances from time to time. Any element of risk adds special interest to your life.

The ninth-house influence makes you interested in advanced education and can motivate you to be something of a student much of your life. Your ability to communicate intelligently impresses others who may well assume you're a college graduate even if you've never gone beyond public school.

While it's generally true that you can and normally do relate well with others, you can't easily tolerate any type of relationship with another which is too close or so binding that it markedly restricts your personal freedom. You enjoy being free so much that you may be willing to fight for the right to choose if this should become necessary in your life.

You love to travel and likely will visit faraway places and even other countries more so than many of your friends. It's also possible you might reside for periods of time in a foreign country, or at least live a long distance from your birth home area.

THIRD DECAN of LEO Rising (20.00 - 30.00 degrees)

Copyright Dell Magazines [Dell Horoscope] -- Online version Copyright 1999 - 2014 - Elbert Wade [Author]

The sub-influences of this Aries/MARS decan can induce some quite exciting and interesting characteristics. Leo's Sun rulership gives much power and warmth; Mars' sub-influence of this decan adds the ability to concentrate and focus this Sun-given power so that it can be utilized most efficiently for whatever might need to be accomplished. If you use this tremendously-potent energy wisely, there are few things that can stand for long in the way of your progress in life.

Your external ego is strong because of the Leo influence, but it is even more accented because of Aries' association with the first house and also the first sign of the natural zodiac. You may need to exercise some restraint so that you don't become too overbearing in your interpersonal relatioships since being so can create serious problems. Your pride in self and your natural dynamism are admirable only so long as they do not impose markedly upon others' egos and rights.

Mars' high-energy makes you very active and quick-moving; it's difficult for you to remain idle even briefly. Because of this restlessness, you seldom need to be concerned about becoming overweight. While physical characteristics (features) tend to largeness, they may be more angular than those with other decans of Leo rising.

Since you respond so well to challenges, you'll be happier if you set yourself a rather difficult goal; once you've accomplished it, set another right away. In selecting a career or business, don't settle for the totally-ordinary or routine because you can too easily become bored.

Contact sports may have a very special appeal to you, and you may be very good when a lot of competition is involved. One thing is certain: If you keep active, you should have a very interesting and fulfilled life. Others generally like to be around you because your zest for life seems to inspire them to the point of believing that life truly is worth living.
