The rising sign or ascendant (the external self) is second in importance only to the Sun-Sign (the inner self). For most people who know you less than intimately, it may be the determining factor as they see, identify, and know you. It also influences how you view, act, and react to others and the environment. While your Sun-Sign is determined by your birth date (and in some border-line cases the time), the rising sign (ascendant) must be calculated for the exact birth time and place. Theoretically, the rising sign advances one degree (of 360 degrees of a full circle -- a 24-hour day) every four minutes, meaning each 30-degree sign takes about two hours to move upward -- due to counterclockwise axial rotation of planet earth -- across the ascendant point: the eastern horizon. Definition: decan (decanate) -- a ten-degree distance (division or portion) of a sign; each zodiac sign has three decans, which collectively equal thirty degrees. First decan (any sign) is 00.00 to 9.59.59 - second decan is 10.00.to 19.59.59 - third decan is 20.00 to 29.59.59.

[Rule-of-Thumb or "ballpark": If you were born during the first 40 minutes of any rising-sign's beginning hour (see second link below for ascendant table), the first decan 0 to 10 degrees likely will be ascending; if born 41 to 80 minutes (1 hour +20 minutes) after the sign's beginning hour the second decan likely will be ascending; if born 81 minutes (1 hour +21 minutes) to 2 hours after, the third decan likely will be ascending. An accurately calculated horoscope is necessary for determining for sure the decan ascending. You can get your printable natal horoscope + list of major aspects emailed to you promptly. Click HERE.]

The rising sign (and its decan) are of great significance in determining your personality, mannerisms, character, mentality, emotions, weeknesses, health and life-pattern, as well as characteristics to cultivate, or correct. If you or someone you know has Aries rising, you'll want to study the "Overview" first and then the decan information.

Hopefully you know your rising sign (ascendant). It not, refer to the easy-to-use ascendant (rising sign) table here.

OR -- If uncertain about (or need to verify) your own (or anyone's) natal horoscope's true Rising Sign (Ascendant) and the Decan -- [First Decan: 00 to 10 degrees / Second Decan: 10 to 20 degrees / Third Decan :20 to 30 degrees], you can find out fast and FREE (plus get sign/degree/minutes for Moon Sign / Sun-Sign / Midheaven (10th House sign), and latitude/longitude of birthplace) HERE. Use also to read your SUN-SIGN (inner self) and MOON SIGN (emotional self)

[Hint Number One: The information following can be applied as well to your Sun-Sign (your inner self). Relate the "Overview" to natal Sun in Virgo. Also read "First Decan" if you were born in the first 10 days of this sign -- Sun in 0 to 10 degrees; "Second Decan" if born in days 10 to 20 -- Sun in 10 to 20 degrees; "Third Decan" if born in days 20 to 30 -- Sun in 20 to 30 degrees.]

[Hint Number Two: The descriptions following can also be applied to your Moon-Sign (your emotional self). Relate the "Overview" to natal Moon in Virgo. Also read "First Decan" if your Moon is in the first 10 degrees of this sign; "Second Decan" if your Moon is 10 to 20 degrees of this sign; "Third Decan" if your Moon is in 20 to 30 degrees of this sign.]

VIRGO RISING -- OVERVIEW

Copyright Dell Magazines [Dell Horoscope] -- Online version Copyright 1999 - 2014 - Elbert Wade [Author]

Fast-moving quick-acting, youthful, versatile-and communicative Mercury rules the external self of all with this natal ascendant. Therefore, you are seemingly blessed with "eternal youthfulness," an ability to communicate well (sometimes too much!), and a rather natural curiosity about practically everything. You love to organize things; it's very difficult for you to function well in a disordered environment, whether on the job, at home or elsewhere.

You normally are not afraid of work because staying constructively busy provides you with perhaps your greatest joy in livIng. You prefer to work mainly with tangibles insofar as you can; theories, concepts, feelings and emotions are not as easy for you to deal with successfully as are things you can see, hear, smell, touch or taste. Perhaps you'd enjoy life to a greater extent if you learned to relax more often, if you understood that nothing and no one (including yourself!) is perfect, and if you realized that there is more to life than just hard work. There should be some time set aside for recreational activities and fun.

Virgo rising inclines to medium to below-average height; the body can be quite "delicate" and/or it can be compact. For some of you, the limbs may be disproportionately longer than the trunk of the body. The head normally is roundish, rather short, but usually well proportioned.

The hair may be rather coarse, brown to black in color. The body could have an abundance of hair. Eyebrows may be fine, thin, and shaped well. The skin may have a very good texture and tend to be light in its pigmentation. Teeth tend to be average in size, well spaced, and usually of generally good quality. The voice is normally rather soft; however, it can sound a bit flat and somewhat lacking in coloration. Overall, it is the general neatness and cleanliness typical to Virgo which really catches the eye.

Regardless of the Sun-Sign, there is something of the fussy bachelor or prim old maid present. You probably look your best when in very simple attire. Your mannerisms often cause you to fidget with objects at times with an apparent lack of attention that you are doing so. There may be a tendency to count steps, windowpanes, tiles, bricks, etc. You try to read all signs, including roadside billboards. You tend to be generally practical by nature, and there always seems to be something essentially reliable about you as you have a very strong sense of duty, even though you go about most matters with reserve and some degree of timidity.

You can do well at many types of executive work if you don't have to be too much of a "boss." You are predominantly intellectual and a completely rational type in your thinking. You are reflective, highly analytical, introspective -- a mental perfectionist who is frequently all but totally obsessed with details. Indeed, there may be some lack of originality because of such preoccupation with the bits and pieces.

Seemingly you are born to be the critic. There may be a caustic wit which not everyone understands -- or appreciates. Generally, the emotions are subordinated to the mind. Your emotional attitude is cool but kind, seldom very ardent. Most personal relationships are tempered by a sense of duty rather than by strong magnetism. Most weaknesses are keyed to a lack of self-confidence and an inborn anxiety complex. There may be a tendency to split hairs, to fuss endlessly, and often to nag. You can possess a too-submissive attitude and an overly-serious and pessimistic outlook on life.

Of all the signs rising, Virgo likely is the most likely to preoccupied with health and hygiene. Though many of you do not appear especially robust, you are actually wiry and often live to a very ripe old age. While you often discuss matters of health, you must avoid allowing "ill health" to become an escape mechanism when you experience other non-related difficulties. You may have the best-stocked medicine cabinet in the neighborhood. Your life pattern is rather prosaic but exemplary. Normally, progress in the career starts around the 25th-to 30th year and is positively maintained thereafter. You may never actually retire.

Characteristics to cultivate are expressed by these words: intelligence, thoughfulness, activity, perfection, consciousness, discretion, intuition, efficiency, economy, prudence, organization and perception. Some possible undesirable characteristics which might stand correction are denoted by these words: selfishness, anxiety, worry, fussiness, irritability, discontent, apprehension, secrecy, criticism, aloofness, coldness, timidity, indecisiveness, and skepticism. Most of these less-desirable traits have already been or can be corrected by the proper application of your outstandingly-good qualities, and your desire for "perfection."

FIRST DECAN of VIRGO Rising (00.00 - 10.00 degrees)

Copyright Dell Magazines [Dell Horoscope] -- Online version Copyright 1999 - 2014 - Elbert Wade [Author]

This Virgo/MERCURY decan is, of course, the most typical. Very much of what was covered above applies fully, but there is more to consider. Since Mercury rules your external self, you're probably gifted in most areas of communication. You seem to have an especially good command of both the spoken and written word. Possibly you may use this ability profitably as a teacher, speaker, salesperson, reporter, writer, editor, etc.

You are very versatile and are able to adapt quickly to changes in your life and environment; you are that rare person who can put "square pegs" in "round holes" if necessary. You may be ambidextrous or even left-handed. You like to work and may not be really content unless you are busy. While you won't refuse manual labor, you much prefer your work to require less of you physically and more mentally.

Since this is the cardinal (active/driving) decan of Virgo rising, you may call up more personal energy as needed to succeed in your endeavors than those with the other decans of this earthy rising sign. While most of you with this influnence are quite intelligent, many have an ability to express themselves so that others judge them as being more brilliant than they actually may be. The sixth-house influence of Virgo is evidenced also by your concern for matters pertaining to your health and general well-being. It's possible you have a "remedy" for just about everything that may ail you -- and for everyone else you know as well.

You may be attracted to employment in some areas of the medical profession. You can be an excellent organizer as Mercury gives you the seeming ability to entertain several ideas at the same time. It's probable you might get more enjoyment from life if you didn't insist that everything be "perfect." In this area you can be very tough on everyone around you--even tougher on yourself. Learn to take things easier and a bit less seriously.

SECOND DECAN of VIRGO Rising (10.00 - 20.00 degrees)

Copyright Dell Magazines [Dell Horoscope] -- Online version Copyright 1999 - 2014 - Elbert Wade [Author]

The important sub-influences of this Capricorn/SATURN decan can cause numerous rather interesting differences. Capricorn is the natural ruler of the tenth house of career, profession, business, honors and recognition; therefore, you have a personal hunger for success in everything that you do. You seem never to be satisfied with the status quo when there is even the remotest possibility of improvement.

With Virgo as your ascendant, you are more than willing to work hard to get to the top; but your Capricorn sub-influence often makes you experience rather frequent and unpleasant setbacks and delays along the way. Fortunately, whatever the disappointment, you never allow it to discourage you for too long and soon are busily involved once again in working toward success.

You could be something of a "late bloomer" in that you may not realize much real success until you are around 30 years of age. Following your thirtieth birthday, your progress may be markedly accelerated at least until your late fifties when you could be at or near your pinnacle of material and personal success. The Saturn influence can cause you to take everything--including yourself -- perhaps a bit too seriously. You need to guard against looking too frequently on the negative or dark side of issues. Doing so can bring on extended periods of depression which can make your own and others' lives less than pleasant. You would do well to learn to laugh at your own and others' foibles. Try to spend more time in recreational activities and a bit less time at serious work.

If you aren't careful, you can neglect family and other rewarding aspects of your life in your drive to achieve social position and material success. Where will you be if you achieve professional and business success and then discover you have no one left to help you enjoy what you have achieved? Physically, you may be heavier set from the waist down than above. Take care of your dry skin with adequate applications of lotions or creams.

THIRD DECAN of VIRGO Rising (20.00 - 30.00 degrees)

Copyright Dell Magazines [Dell Horoscope] -- Online version Copyright 1999 - 2014 - Elbert Wade [Author]

The sub-influences of this Taurus/VENUS decan can induce quite exciting and interesting modifications. Virgo rising alone is enough to make you practical, but adding the Taurus influence puts you clearly in the category of "super practical." In your everyday life if you can't see, hear, smell, touch, or taste something, it just may not register as being of any importance to you. The fixed nature of Taurus adds a high level of tenacity and staying power to the mutable (changeful) and often indecisive qualities of Virgo.

When you set out to do something, it's your nature to persist until you succeed. Fortunately, you seldom go about things in a blind, stubborn manner since you can employ the innate intelligence of Mercury and the organizational and methodical qualities of Virgo. While it is possible for you to adjust to change, you'd prefer not to do so unless it is really necessary. You are generally very patient and will tolerate a lot of disappointment, criticism and pressure for a long period of time; but when you've been pushed too far, you will certainly let others know -- often to their surprise that anyone so easygoing couId "suddenly" change so much. Your basic tenacity might, at times, cause certain of your acquaintances to say you're stubborn or bullheaded (two typical Taurus key words).

This decan can add "squareness" and moderate weight or mass to your frame. Appearance-wise, you are fortunate to have Venus, planet of physical beauty, as the ruler of this decan. It can contribute positively to your features by giving you good bone structure, fine skin texture, beautiful eyes, a cute "ski" nose, nice teeth, sensual lips, and a well-proportioned body generally. You may have a very pleasant speaking and singing voice. Since you have an especially good ear for pitch, this could lead you into a career or hobby related to music. You love fine clothes and quality jewelry; strive always to dress in an impressive yet simplistic style.
